A home above Genoa’s cranes

In the heart of Genoa’s historic center, on the Collina di Castello where the city’s first stronghold was established, two young creatives found the perfect place to call home. The Bailucchi Apartment, designed by lllab Architettura, is a domestic space that weaves together historical references, artistic elements, and architectural playfulness. Its name comes from the Genoese word “bailucchi”, which refers to a specific hook used by the cranes in Genoa’s port. These hooks, composed of two prongs tightened by a central pull, embody the city’s culture of maritime work, linguistic exchanges, and cross-cultural interactions.

The apartment, developed across two floors, results from merging two distinct units. The lower floor houses the sleeping area, while the upper floor features the living area, highlighted by a spacious terrace offering spectacular views of the port and the historic cityscape. The upper section, a recessed mansard compared to the building’s perimeter, brings dynamic geometries and a privileged outdoor space.

The connection between the two levels, with a height difference of 4.2 meters, presented a significant design challenge. The staircase, a central element of the project, is both functional and sculptural. It begins with a concrete plateau leading to a lightweight structure of square-section metal tubing topped with oak treads. The railing, inspired by the “Carmassi” design, is crafted in azure nautical rope, while the handrail integrates diffuse lighting, making the staircase a visual feature that guides the eye between the levels.

This vertical element also contributes to the interplay of layers on both floors, creating permeable boundaries between spaces and functions. This design allows for continuous glimpses and framed views, not only of family life but also of the city outside.

The living area on the upper floor extends lengthwise, with the staircase landing situated at its center. To the left is the dining area, while to the right lies the reading and sitting area, culminating in a small door leading to a compact studio. This diminutive space, projecting slightly into the terrace, feels like a crane operator’s cabin, perched over the void with its square window.

The L-shaped plan and sloped roof create dynamic, intense geometries. Curved openings in the walls align with the space’s flow, inviting curiosity about what lies beyond—whether it’s the kitchen, the studio, or an artwork.

Designed with sensitivity and vision, the apartment is imbued with the personal art collection of the young gallery owner, transforming the domestic space into a lived-in gallery. The living area opens onto the long terrace, which runs its entire length. Sheltered from the northern winds, the terrace overlooks the Collina di Castello on one side and the bustling port on the other. Here, the familiar sounds of the city fade, replaced by the rhythmic hum of the working port and its cranes—Genoa’s ever-active heart.
