Open Project celebrated its 40th anniversary with the inauguration of its new headquarters in Bologna, marking a pivotal moment in the studio’s history. Located at Via Pompeo Scipione Dolfi 7, the new space reflects the studio’s ongoing evolution and commitment to innovation. The inauguration also featured the launch of the studio’s first monograph, “Immaginare, progettare, costruire,” published by Danilo Montanari Editore.
The new headquarters, a 1,200-square-meter space spread across three floors, is steeped in history. Once a 16th-century church, later transformed into a dance hall and then a carpentry workshop, the building represents a tapestry of Bologna’s past. Open Project’s year-long restoration masterfully balanced the building’s historical elements with the functional needs of a contemporary workspace.
Architectural highlights include the preservation of the structure’s original geometric form, evident in the three arches on the ground floor and the exposed outdoor space now serving as a public park. The restoration uncovered historical treasures such as a double order of frescoes and a commemorative stone plaque, now showcased at the entrance. In the main hall on the first floor, with ceilings over 10 meters high, the raw wall surfaces emphasize the layered history of the building.
The design ethos behind the new headquarters prioritizes openness and collaboration. Workspaces are predominantly open-plan, fostering continuous interaction and idea-sharing among team members. Key features include a custom-designed acoustic meeting box on the ground floor, which creates an intimate space without disrupting the building’s original volume, and multifunctional areas for team meetings and social interactions.
The inaugural event provided insight into the legacy and future of Open Project. Guests toured the restored spaces, followed by a talk moderated by Professor Aldo Norsa. During the presentation of *”Imagine, Design, Build”* curated by Maria Beatrice Bettazzi and Piero Orlandi, the firm’s journey was explored in depth. Since its founding, it has become one of the leading architectural practices in Italy under the leadership of Maurizio Piolanti and Francesco Conserva. The monograph also features iconic projects such as the Unipol Tower in Bologna, the Bulgari Manufacture in Valenza, and The Social Hub Bologna.
Accompanying the opening was the photographic exhibition “Frames of Identity: 40 Years of Architecture.” Displayed in the central hall on the second floor, the exhibition features iconic images of Open Project’s works by photographers such as Giacomo Albo, Luca Capuano, and Vincenzo Ruocco. Complementing the photographs are graphic artworks and renderings by renowned artists and studios, emphasizing the integration of architecture and artistic expression.
The new headquarters is more than a workspace—it’s envisioned as a creative hub for the city. Starting in 2025, the studio will host events, exhibitions, and talks to promote interdisciplinary dialogue. This vision builds on Open Project’s philosophy of engaging with diverse fields and pushing the boundaries of architectural practice.
Sustainability is a cornerstone of the new space. Upgraded infrastructure and modern acoustic designs integrate seamlessly with the building’s historical elements, achieving a delicate balance between innovation and preservation. The focus on environmental responsibility mirrors Open Project’s broader commitment to sustainable design across its portfolio.
