18 Screens

Sanjay Puri Architects, founded by the architect Sanjay Puri, consists of more than 70 young professionals working on projects of various kinds, such as residential developments, shopping centres, hotels, parks, or private projects.

This architectural project developed by Sanjay Puri’s team is located on one of the main streets of Lucknow in India, a city with a vast heritage of historic buildings dating back to the 18th century.
The building destined to become a private home was designed according to the typical canons of the traditional Indian court house, which usually presents an openness of spaces particularly suitable for overcoming the hot temperatures of the summer months.
The structure has six bedrooms interspersed with terraces opening onto the outdoor gardens and the courtyard surrounding the house.
Carved and embroidered screens, inspired by traditional Indian architecture, have been created for each room on the south, east and west sides, providing cool shelter from the sun and the hustle and bustle of outside traffic.
These structures create an evocative play of light that can be admired from the seats positioned nearby.
On the north side, large windows indirectly illuminate the interior spaces.
Thanks to the modular volumetric proportions and the carefully integrated gardens in the courtyard, each room becomes an individual living space.

The building is mainly built of rough concrete, natural-coloured sandstone and softly coloured wood, contrasting with the vibrant Indian art decorations and the presence of vegetation in each of the interior volumes.

The house’s comfortable ventilation and lighting design in harmony with the context provides an evocative experience of the local culture and social aspects.
