An itinerary in Arrigo Arrighetti’s Sant’Ambrogio district
As part of the celebrations for the centenary of the birth of architect Arrigo Arrighetti promoted by Municipio 6, an itinerary organised to visit the Sant’Ambrogio 1 neighbourhood will take place on 22 October 2022. The social housing complex, designed in 1963 for the Istituto case popolari (I.A.C.P), has a new religious architecture at its centre, the church of San Giovanni Bono.
The municipality has entrusted an active role to the Museolab6 cultural association in curating this walk-hike, with the aim of discovering and getting to know one of Milan’s most significant post-war neighbourhoods, designed by Arrigo Arrighetti in the early 1960s as a self-sufficient residential area, with ample green spaces and all the necessary services, on the edge of the Barona area.
One of the very first examples of a ’15-minute city’ experimented in our country. The Sant’Ambrogio 1 neighbourhood was born as a social symbol of a metropolis that was rapidly changing between the 1950s and 1960s, driven by the enormous demographic growth of the period, and which saw the need to build and provide high-density housing in a short time.
A district that was contended by the future first inhabitants, because innovative was also the way it was opened up and assigned: a large part of the housing was, in fact, assigned to the widows and orphans of former municipal employees, city policemen and many municipal taxi drivers.
A true neighbourhood municipality, in fact, which once again opens its doors to the city with this beautiful initiative.
