A park for a greener future

MC A – Mario Cucinella Architects has designed with PAISÀ Landscape the masterplan of the Oltreferrovia Park in Carpi. The design of the Oltreferrovia Park masterplan stems from the desire of the Municipality of Carpi to create a mediation between the historic city and the extensive agricultural space located behind the railway line. Through a survey to the citizens, the desire to have a green area that would allow them to reconnect with the surrounding natural space and, at the same time, the need to be able to practice sports and relax outdoors emerged. The project looks forward into the future and is designed to be continuously evolving and developable in the years to come by adapting to the needs of the community.

Following and bringing to light the grid of the agricultural landscape, the design is divided into what have been called “rooms“. The equipped rooms will be used for more dynamic activities such as free body fitness, picnic areas, barbecues, reading and relaxation areas and children’s playrooms. The natural rooms instead will turn their attention to the creation of biodiverse environments, here we will have rooms used as social gardens, where citizens can be involved in the first person, thematic gardens and flower fields. The green project moves in the restoration of the landscape memories of the Po Valley territory that characterized it until the middle of the last century. In the past, in fact, the territory was strongly affected by the coexistence of various types of environments, from peri-tidal forests, wetlands and waterways.

The reticulated morphology of the agricultural landscape is mixed with the new design, where in the center, a sort of belvedere determines the sense of openness of the large central lawn, enhancing the visual continuity with both the historic city and the neighboring countryside. From the large central green heart, the green permeates to the north and south, through the rows of trees that follow the axes of pedestrian and cycle-pedestrian connection, in the gardens and areas of relevance of services as a sort of extension of naturalness. A project that is part of a vision of the city that changes, evolves and succeeds in giving life to the desires of the community for a space for socializing and attentive to the needs of contemporary sustainability.
